Social Media Character Limits

Paste a post once and see, side by side, whether it fits X, Instagram and LinkedIn — before you publish and find out it does not.

Each platform counts differently, and the difference is what trips people up. A post that fits LinkedIn easily may be far too long for X, and a link that looks short in your draft can eat far more of an X post than you expect, because X counts every link the same way. Checking each platform separately is slow and error-prone, which is why this page checks all four fields at once: X posts, Instagram captions, Instagram bios and LinkedIn posts.

The counts are shown as characters used, characters remaining, and a plain fits or does-not-fit verdict for each field. If a post is over on one platform, you can trim it for that platform without rewriting it for all of them. Limits checked October 2026; platforms change their rules, verify in the platform before publishing.

Two warnings belong at the top. First, X Premium long posts are not the standard limit checked here: this page checks the standard 280-character limit. Second, hashtag counts are not shown as a hard limit here, because sources disagree on Instagram hashtags.

Text is processed only in the browser and is never uploaded to a server. Nothing you paste leaves this device.

All four fields are checked below either way; this choice only highlights one row.

How to use

  1. Paste your post into the box, links included, exactly as you plan to publish it.
  2. Read the four rows: characters used, characters remaining or over, and fits or does-not-fit for each field.
  3. If a field is over, trim the post for that field; the other fields update as you type.
  4. Check the URL count: on X, each link counts as 23 characters no matter how long it really is.
  5. Before publishing, verify the current limit in the platform itself, since limits change.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a link count as 23 characters on X?

X wraps every link in its own short link, and that wrapped link counts as 23 characters no matter how long the original address is. This page applies that rule: each URL in your post counts as 23 characters. A URL here means an address starting with http:// or https:// and running to the next space; trailing punctuation attached to the address is counted as part of it, so check a link that ends a sentence carefully.

Why are Instagram captions and bios different limits?

They are different fields with different rules: a caption can be much longer than a bio. This page checks captions against 2,200 characters and bios against 150 characters, so choose the field you are writing for. A bio that fits as a caption may still be far too long as a bio, and that is the most common surprise in this checker.

What about X Premium long posts?

X Premium long posts allow far longer posts than the standard limit. They are not the standard limit checked here: this page checks the standard 280-character limit that applies without a Premium subscription, because that is the limit most readers and most accounts still face.

Do limits change, and what about hashtags?

Yes. Limits checked October 2026; platforms change their rules, verify in the platform before publishing. Treat this page as a pre-publish check, not as the platform rule itself. Hashtag counts are not shown as a hard limit here, because sources disagree on Instagram hashtags, and a number presented as a hard rule would mislead more than it helps.
