Germany Income Tax Calculator (Brutto-Netto) 2025

German take-home pay is famously hard to estimate by hand: the tax tariff is a formula, not a table; the solidarity surcharge phases in; and four social contributions each stop at their own ceiling. This calculator runs the official 2025 (and 2026) computation for a single employee in statutory health insurance.

German income tax 2025: §32a tariff formula on taxable income after the €1,230 and €36 Pauschalen and the Vorsorgepauschale; solidarity surcharge 5.5% of tax above the €19,950 Freigrenze (11.9% phase-in cap); employee social contributions KV 7.3% + ½ Zusatzbeitrag, PV 1.8% (+0.6pp childless), RV 9.3%, AV 1.3%, each capped at its Beitragsbemessungsgrenze.

About this calculator

German income tax has no band table: §32a of the Income Tax Act defines a formula. Income up to the Grundfreibetrag (€12,096 in 2025) is untaxed; then a linear-progressive zone runs from 14% to 23.97% (to €17,443), a second from 23.97% to 42% (to €68,480), then a flat 42% to €277,825 and 45% above. Before the formula applies, the Arbeitnehmer-Pauschbetrag (€1,230), the Sonderausgaben-Pauschbetrag (€36) and the Vorsorgepauschale — the withholding estimate of your pension, health and care contributions — come off your gross pay.

Social contributions are capped: health and care stop at €66,150 of salary (2025), pension and unemployment at €96,600. The solidarity surcharge is 5.5% of income tax but only above €19,950 of tax (2025), phasing in at 11.9% of the excess — which is why most middle earners pay no Soli at all. Church tax, where it applies, is 8% of income tax in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria and 9% elsewhere.

How to use it

  1. Pick the tax year and enter your gross monthly salary (annual gross is monthly × 12).
  2. Enter your children (it changes the care contribution) and your health fund’s Zusatzbeitrag — the average is the default.
  3. Choose church tax only if you are a registered member.
  4. Read the tax, surcharge, contributions and net pay; the table breaks every component down.

The formula

Annual gross = Monthly gross × 12; zvE = Annual gross − €1,230 − €36 − Vorsorgepauschale; Tax = §32a formula on zvE; Soli = min(5.5% × tax, 11.9% × (tax − Freigrenze)); Social = capped rates on gross

Worked example for 2025, single, no children, not a church member, average Zusatzbeitrag 2.5%, €60,000 salary: Vorsorgepauschale = RV 9.3% (€5,580) + KV 8.25% (€4,950, at the reduced 14.0% rate used for withholding) + PV 2.4% (€1,440, including the childless surcharge) = €11,970. zvE = 60,000 − 1,230 − 36 − 11,970 = €46,764. Zone-2 tax: z = (46,764 − 17,443) / 10,000 = 2.9321; tax = (176.64 × 2.9321 + 2,397) × 2.9321 + 1,015.13 = €9,561 (floored). Soli is €0 (tax below the €19,950 Freigrenze). Social contributions at the actually-paid rates: KV 8.55% (€5,130) + PV 2.4% (€1,440) + RV 9.3% (€5,580) + AV 1.3% (€780) = €12,930. Net pay €37,509 a year, €3,125.75 a month.

Worked example

A single, childless employee on €5,000 a month (€60,000 a year) in 2025 with statutory health insurance at the average Zusatzbeitrag: income tax €9,561, no solidarity surcharge, social contributions €12,930 — total deductions €22,491 (37.49% of gross), net pay €37,509 a year, about €3,126 a month. This matches published Brutto-Netto results for the same profile.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Vorsorgepauschale use 8.25% for health insurance when I actually pay 8.55%?

That is the withholding convention (§39b EStG, Programmablaufplan): the KV part of the Vorsorgepauschale is computed at the reduced (ermäßigt) KV rate of 14.0% — 7.0% plus half your Zusatzbeitrag — rather than the full 14.6%. The social contributions you actually pay (shown in the table) use the full rate. At filing, your real Vorsorgeaufwendungen replace the Pauschale entirely, which typically produces a small refund — for the worked example above, about €25.

When do I actually pay the solidarity surcharge?

Only once your income tax exceeds the Freigrenze — €19,950 in 2025 (€20,350 in 2026) for a single filer. In the phase-in zone the surcharge is capped at 11.9% of the excess over the Freigrenze, and the full 5.5% is only reached at about €37,095 of income tax (roughly €114,300 of taxable income). For a single childless employee that means Soli starts at roughly €90,000 of gross salary — the €60,000 example pays none.

What changes in 2026?

The Grundfreibetrag rises to €12,348, the zone boundaries move up (zone 1 to €17,799, zone 2 to €69,878), the 45% threshold stays at €277,826, and the Soli Freigrenze rises to €20,350. On the social side, the ceilings rise (health/care €69,750, pension/unemployment €101,400) and the average Zusatzbeitrag rises to 2.9%. All 2026 figures are already enacted and built into the year selector.

What is not modelled here?

Married splitting (Steuerklasse III/V and the §32a Abs. 5 doubling rule), the Kinderfreibetrag and Günstigerprüfung at assessment, Saxony’s different care split (employee 2.3% / 2.9% childless because Saxony keeps Buß- und Bettag as a holiday), church-tax capping at high incomes, private health insurance (possible above the €73,800 Versicherungspflichtgrenze in 2025), and mini-job / Gleitzone rules. Steuerklasse changes withholding during the year but not the annual assessment for a single filer.

Why is the marginal rate so high at €60,000?

At the worked example’s taxable income the income-tax marginal rate is 34.33% (from the zone-2 formula’s slope), and social contributions add 21.55% on the next euro (8.55 + 2.4 + 9.3 + 1.3) — a combined marginal deduction rate of about 55.9%, until the first contribution ceiling is hit. That is the normal German picture for middle earners, and it is why gross-to-net comparisons surprise people coming from flat-tax systems.
